Can your bike be converted ?
Most reasonably modern bikes can be converted but there are a few bikes out there that do not easily accommodate conversion. Normally this is associated with the crank area design and frame configuration. When an installer assesses a bike for possible conversion he/she will also check on the chain, gears and brakes to ensure they are in good condition. Worn componentry may cause other problems or endanger the rider, motor assisted or not.
Installation can be carried out by a bike savy user with DIY skills although some specialised tools are required to remove and fit the crank assembly and some other componentry. There is also some electrical assembly required.
Conversion by a trained installer normally takes about 3-4 hours and costs $200. They will ensure that it is installed safely and reliably to protect the motor kit from water intrusion or any other possible damage. Extra small parts such as spacers, bolts etc required to fit the kit are included in the price. All drive components, chain, gears etc will be cleaned and lubricated during conversion. All necessary wiring will be tidied and merged with existing controls and surplus hardware such as the front gear shifter, de railleur components and cable removed. This may depend on the design of the shifter as some are incorporated into brake enclosures.
When your bike is ready basic instructions are provided and if necessary some training.
