Older bikes can pose certain problems, one in particular. The cabling to the rear Derallieurs and brakes often is routed under the bottom bracket where the motor will fit. I've replaced the guide with a cable sleeve to protect it and reduce the space required. Seems to have worked so far. Completion pictures to come soon.
Here's the latest conversion coming along. This is an older bike, a Marin Larkspur in a small frame size. It's all aluminium and very light. It's been a bit of a challenge so far with a fair bit of preinstall maintenance and upgrade required but it's all coming together. At the owners request I've replaced the worn rear tyre and the rear brake lever assembly and serviced the cables. The rear cassette and the chain have both been washed clean of grit and dirt and the frame has had a lot of grime removed. A rather nice bike as you can see. I'm fitting a torque motor kit and an 11.6 Amp Hour side mount bottle battery which only just squeezes inside the frame. The rear carrier has been removed as well. It should be quite a mover when done, very light.

Finished the conversion of Jim's bike this evening. Quick test ride down and up the driveway and it feels like a good ride. Lightweight frame and plenty of power.
Lots happening at present, Another interesting article spotted on Stuff. Kind of gets some of the technical bits wrong but it's right about the benefits to your health and wallet. http://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/well-good/inspire-me/88529683/The-life-changing-magic-of-e-bikes And on the current conversion made excellent progress tonight. Took off all the unnecessary hardware and started fitting the motor kit. Always a bit of a mission to get the bottom bracket hardware off but it gets easier after that. Still got wiring, pedals and sensors to mount up but should be riding by tomorrow night I reckon. Here's a few pix of the frame, controller, battery holder and motor and another of the chain side with motor installed. See it's still got that 8 gear cluster at the back to get the best out of the rider and the motor. Going to look nice this one. And go fast.
Even the Rockets in NZ are battery powered ! http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11785238 And I am about to do an EBIKE conversion on a very nice new bike for a gentleman up North. He gave me permission to post a few pix up here as it progresses. Rather nice lightweight sporty Merida frame with low crossbar and hydraulic disk brakes. This should look real nice when done.
Here's a pic of how it looks when he dropped it off to me. And here are all the bits I am going to fit. EcoMatters are holding a big EcoDay on April 9th at Olympic park, New Lynn. Check it out on the Link.
http://www.ecomatters.org.nz/ecoday/ E+BIKE will be there in the new Bike Hub to show you their new EBikes and conversion kits. Come along to see and talk to us about your bike options. We are also holding two seminars on March 25th and April 1 at their offices. Bring along your bike to see if it is a candidate for power. I'll be posting times a bit later when we confirm them. EV Battery terchnology is improving rapidly. How soon we will see this reflected down into bikes and other vehicles I don't know but if it is lighter and cheaper to manufacture then it could be sooner than you think.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-4110348/Samsung-shows-electric-car-battery-charge-300-miles-just-20-minutes.html Another convert about to happen I reckon. A test ride will prove it to you, it's not only further, faster and fitter, it's fun.
http://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/88173232/david-slack-like-a-true-natures-child Good to see the new Transport Minister walking the talk, ... and talking it up as well. Now we need more of the infrastructure to support this programme. 80% of our power generation is renewable, hydro and wind. We are ideally placed to make the best of EV transport globally.
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/politics/news/article.cfm?c_id=280&objectid=11770445 I've been out riding quite a bit over the holidays and exploring some places I haven't been to before. There has also been quite a few enquiries regarding EBike conversions I am dealing with at present. And our first new bikes are on the way. Demand is already high enough for us to place another order straight away for even more models. With the sharp pricing and excellent features they are an excellent option. We've also investigated other install options in the battery area. Some less conventional bikes are not suitable for the current battery mount options so we have sourced other side mount and alternative frame and carrier versions. These will only normally be bought in on request so a slight delay in delivery is incurred but it opens up our offerings to other riders. Contact us to discuss. Another NZ Herald article on walking and cycling and the need to provide for it in new community planning. It's a lot harder to retrofit afterwards. I am waiting eagerly for the opening of the new Waterview, Mt Roskill Motorway tunnel with all the ancillary paths and access that has been built into the project. When completed it should be a nonstop route from Lincoln Road to Onehunga and beyond. That is good community planning.
